First Trike Program

At OPWSA, we understand the importance of regular exercise, especially for those with Prader-Willi Syndrome. Finding fun ways to be active throughout the year can be challenging and purchasing equipment like tricycles and bicycles for your child can be financially draining. Therefore, we’re happy to support families with children with PWS in encouraging fun, play, and exercise for their child by providing their first trike!

What Is The First Trike Program?

In order to encourage children with PWS between the ages of two and five to have fun, get active, and learn the benefits of exercise, we are loaning out ten trikes! The trike program works as each family uses the bike given to them for one year or until their child outgrows it, and then they return it to us to lend to the next family. This means that one trike can bring a lot of joy, play, and exercise to multiple families across Ontario!

Families with children between the ages of two and five with PWS in Ontario qualify for this trike program, and the trikes will be distributed based on availability.

The application for the program is straightforward and quick to fill out, and The First Trike initiative could greatly benefit your family and your child.

What Bikes Are Available?

This program loans out two different trikes that are categorized by age group. The age groups fall under 2-4 years old, and 4-5 years old.

The YBike Trainer (Ages 2-4)

For very young children—ages two to four—the YBike Trainer is available. The YBike Trainer is meant to teach children the love of bicycling at a very young age, while having no pedals and being appropriate for their motor skills, the YBike is also teaching young children the fundamentals of riding a bike like balance, steering, and confidence!

While riding the YBike your child will learn necessary motor skills while exercising and having fun!

The TriCart (Ages 4-5)

For young children ages four and five, the TriCart is available. The TriCart is designed more like a traditional tricycle which provides stability, resiliency, and comfort for the child riding it. The TriCart features an ergonomic design, rust-resistant powder-coated frames, real ball bearings in the front wheels, and slip-resistant pedals and handgrips, the TriCart also features a standard-positioned seat that adjusts up and down easily.

The TriCart is a state-of-the-art tricycle that can handle multiple terrains. It’s sturdy, strong, and balanced, allowing small riders to enjoy the benefits of bicycling while also staying safe!

Donating to the Program

If you are in possession of used equipment like the TriCart and the YBike Trainer and you’re interested in supporting this program, please consider donating your used and good-condition tricycles and play equipment for other families to enjoy.
